Who we are:
The Washington State University Society of Women Engineers is dedicated to encouraging women to pursue engineering and STEM based fields, creating an inclusive environment for learning, and engaging with our community to share our passion for STEM. At WSU, we are focused on recruitment, retention, and service. We welcome women from the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture (VCEA) as well as math and science majors. Men are welcome to join our group and support their classmates and fellow future engineers.
What we are doing:
In the spring of 2022, we are hosting our 13th annual Kids’ Science and Engineering Day (KSED). KSED is a carnival-style event where elementary students ages K-5 can learn about basic science and engineering principles through fun, hands-on activities. It is important to us to promote interest in STEM at a young age, as many of us discovered our love for STEM during this formative time. We have a small charge for admission but aim to keep this event as inclusive as possible, so every student has an opportunity to explore STEM. Every student receives a T-shirt and goodie bag with more activities to do at home! We partner with other organizations across WSU to provide engaging activities to teach science and engineering outside the classroom. In 2020, we had 300 WSU student volunteers and over 250 elementary students registered for KSED and we hope to continue to impact so many members of our community.
KSED is returning as an in-person event, and we do not want anyone to miss out! We are revisiting the theme “Dive into the Unknown!” In previous years, we have been unable to provide financial aid the organizations that volunteer to run a booth at this event. This year we hope to fundraise to ensure that finances will not restrict participation from new and returning partners post-Covid.
Your donations will help us meet our goal to provide need-based support to our partners and continue to create a unique and exciting day of science for elementary students of the Palouse!
Can you sell seashells by the seashore? Your donation will help provide handouts for elementary students to learn about taking care of the ocean.
Starfish may not have brains, but we love to foster knowledge about STEM! Your donation will provide materials to give 10 elementary students a goodie bag with take-home activities.
Sea turtles can live for more than 100 years, and the memories students make at KSED will last a lifetime! Your donation will provide funding for three clubs to get the necessary materials to run a booth at KSED.
Great white sharks can have up to 3,000 teeth at one time, that’s a big bite! Your donation will provide enough materials to give 50 elementary students a goodie bag with take-home activities.
The largest animal in the world is the blue whale! Thanks for being a big donor, Your donation will provide funding for seven clubs to get the necessary materials to run a booth at KSED.
